During kitten season, rescue groups and shelters are swamped with mother cats and their offspring. This time of year, they can especially use your help, whether it be in the form of donated cat food, treats, blankets, or money. It is not difficult to find a local pet rescue to donate to, and many smaller groups struggle with the cost of caring for incoming kittens and puppies. They really appreciate any extra help they can get!

Here are a few national and international pet charities of note.

 

1. Best Friends Animal Society: Best Friends

Best Friends’ noble goal is to encourage animal shelters to become no-kill. In addition to providing resources and education to communities throughout the United States, Best Friends also operates a large animal sanctuary.

2 .The North Shore Animal League: North Shore Animal League

This is a very large (perhaps the largest in the world) no-kill animal rescue. If the name sounds familiar, it might be because they’ve often swooped in to help animals in times of great need, such as during natural disasters. They are one of my favorite national rescue groups.

3. ASPCA:  ASPCA

The ASPCA was the United States’ first animal welfare organization. Since the late 1800s the society for the prevention of animal cruelty has fought tirelessly for humane treatment of all animals, including domestic and farm animals. They have helped out in many cruelty cases, during natural disasters and with education and resources about creating a more humane environment. The ASPCA and SPCA are not the same organization. SPCA shelters do not receive funding from the ASPCA.

4. SPCA International:  SPCA

SPCA is a renowned global animal charity dedicated to helping the safety and wellbeing of animals. Among the many ways they contribute is to assist animal welfare organizations in the U.S. and around the globe with supplies and grants

5. Alley Cat Allies: Alley Cat Allies

This organization advocates for the rights of community cats and their humane treatment. It provides education about appropriate care for feral cat colonies. They are also involved in other domestic cat issues including finding homes for cats in need.
